Valletta and Grand Harbor

Valletta is the capital of Malta. The city has the privilege in earning acclaim as the heritage sites of UNESCO in the year 1980. The name Valletta was inherited from ‘Humilissima Civitas Valletta’ which signifies the calm and humble disposition of the city of Valletta. Due to the construction of the grand architectural artifacts of the city, the city is also referred to as somebody as ‘superbissima’ which also signifies ‘most proud’ among the rulers of Europe.

From the historical perspective, Valletta has another feather in the cap. The noted statesman of the 19th Century European figure Benjamin Disraeli came to Valletta on August in the year 1830. As per the versions of Benjamin Disraeli, ‘Valletta was a city of palaces set up by the people of the higher strata of the society for exclusively for the people of the higher strata of the society’.

As per the administration of Valletta city is concerned, Dr Paul Borg Oliver is the mayor of the city of Valletta.

Now coming to the history of the founding of the Valletta city, the episode sounds interesting. Those who are a student of history, they will accept the historical information with joy and glee. The Grand Master of the Order of Saint John, Jean Parisot de la Valette laid the foundation stone pertaining to the city of Valette on March 28, 1566. The Order thought of building up a new city just on the Xiberras peninsula the moment the siege of Malta ends in the year 1565. A prominent architect by the name of Fransesco Laparelli designed the building up of the city, while Gerolamo Cassar. Valletta later on became full fledged urban city on which many historical byuildings of 16th century were built up. Most of the buildings in Valletta city were built during the time of the Knights of Saint John of Jerusalem. After a brief French intervention, the construction boom took place during the British rule. This is what Valletta is today.
