The Megalithic Temples of Malta

Malta is a country located in the South European continent. The country is located in the Southern part of Sicily, Eastern part of Tunisia and the Northern part of Libya. The official languages are Maltese and English. The common religion is Roman Catholic. Malta falls under Common Wealth group of nations. At present, Malta is the lowest of European Union country in terms of population and area.

Malta is a country of temples. There is an influence of Megalithic Period since 5500 BC. The temples are of oldest structure which bears ample testimony to the Pre-Historic Age. The temples of Malta, which are all pertaining to the Megalithic Age, are proud to have been crowned with the coveted honor of UNESCO World Heritage.



Seven Megalithic temples are to be found on the islands of Malta and Gozo. These temples are all found of the basis of individual initiative. Some of these are stated as follows:

  • The Ggantija Complex on the island of Gozo is an example of remarkable achievement of human advancement dating from the Bronze Age 3600 BCE.

  • The Temples of Hagar Qim, Najdra, Tarxien bears an example of architectural expertise.

  • The Ta’ Hagrat and Skorba throws evidence about the development of temple tradition of Malta.

  • The Hal Safleini Hypogenum is a unique structure which dates back to the subterranean age.
  • It is indeed a matter of pride that all the Megalithic Temples of Malta are part of UNESCO World Heritage sites. To many, it is still an unknown mystery the sites ate much older than the Pyramids of Egypt and Stonehenge.
