Hagar Qim Temples, Malta

The Hagar Qim Temples, Malta dates back to the era of c.3200-2500 and was first excavated in the year 1839. This temple stands on a hilltop in the island of Malta. The temple overlooks the sea and is very near to the village of Qrendi.

After the excavations, a decorative pillar altar, two table altars, statues of “fat lady” have been found and presently they are displayed in the National Museum of Archeology, Valletta. Basically the Hagar Qim Temples, Malta is a single unit. But the construction of the temple is such that you will feel that it is a four or five apse structure. The temple has went through very less amount of restoration.

Few original blocks which have been destroyed have been replaced. There is another three apse structure which stands near the temple. This structure has been said to be the quarter of the temples' priest. Some of the other temples are scattered few meters away from the temple. There are various decorations found in the temple which includes sill stone bearing opposing spirals which is common to the Tarxien Temple.



The right side of the temple has a splendid inner enclosure which is made of low stone slabs. The left side of the temple has three high table altars along with a low standing pillar. There is an additional chamber near the left side. The outer wall of the temple is around 6.4m long.
