Spain

Politically, Spain is a constitutional monarchy, along with a hereditary monarch as well as a bicameral legislature, called the Cortes Generales. The executive wing of the government contains a Council of Ministers headed by the President of Spain (equivalent in position to the Prime Minister of India). The President is appointed by the monarch following an election held by the National Assembly.

Geographically, Spain is a country situated in Southern Europe, with three of it's enclaves in North Africa. The mainland of Spain is bordered on all four sides with water bodies. The south and the east of Spain are bordered by the Mediterranean Sea, on the north it is lined by the Bay of Biscay and on the west by the Atlantic Ocean. Spain shares its borders with Portugal, France, Andorra, Gibraltar, and Morocco. Along with Portugal and Andorra, Spain forms part of the Iberian Peninsula. It is, by far, the largest of these three sovereign states.

Being a member European Union since 1986, Spain experienced a sort of renaissance emerging as the eighth-largest economy of the world. In 1978, the constitution altered the name of the state from the Reino de Espaņa to Spain.

Modern Spain is home to a host of cultures, like Celts, Iberians, Romans, Alans, Vandals, Visigoths, and Moors.

Spain's geographical location and its mountainous terrain, has made the region experience a combination of different types of climate. The climate of Spain can be, thus, divided in three zones:

  • The moderate Continental climate of the Peninsula, like in Madrid.
  • The Mediterranean climate region extending from the Andalusian plain along the southern and eastern coasts till the Pyrenees, like in Barcelona.
  • An Oceanic climate around the coastal zone by the Bay of Biscay, as in Bilbao. This region is known as Green Spain.
