Portugal

Portugal or the Portuguese Republic is situated in southwestern part of Europe on the Iberian Peninsula. It is the country on the westernmost part of mainland Europe. Spain borders Portugal on the north and east and on the west and south it is lined by the Atlantic Ocean. Portugal also includes the Atlantic archipelagos of Azores and Madeira. Politically, Portugal ranks among the developed countries, as the country with the highest amount of civil liberties and a considerable amount of press liberty.

There has been a constant inflow of refugees in the modern Portuguese Republic since times immemorial. Iberian, Celtic, Roman, Germanic, and Moorish influences have had a considerable amount of effect on the culture, history, language and ethnic composition of the country. During the 15th and 16th centuries, Portugal became one of the major economic, political, and cultural powers of the world. Portugal is a member of the European Union and the United Nations. It has also been a founding member of the Eurozone, OECD, NATO and Comunidade dos Países de Língua Portuguesa.



Religiously speaking, the Portuguese society is Roman Catholic. About 90% of the population think themselves to be Roman Catholics but only around one-third abide by the religion in an orthodox manner.

Portuguese cuisine is as varied as the ethnic communities residing inside Portugal. Dry cod or bacalhau is the favorite food of the Portuguese. This dish can be cooked in a number of ways. Grilled sardines and caldeirada are the two other favorite fish recipes. Beef, pork, lamb, or chicken are the typical Portuguese meat recipes, that are preferred by the Portuguese. Fast food dishes and pastries or other types of desserts are also liked the people of Portugal. Wine is what has made the country acquire an international fame.
