Italy

Italy or the Italian Republic is a country located in Southern Europe. Italy occupies the whole of the Italian Peninsula, as well as Sicily and Sardinia, the two largest islands in the Mediterranean Sea. Italy's boundary is shared by France, Switzerland, Austria and Slovenia. San Marino and the Vatican City are enclaves located within Italian peninsula, and Campione d'Italia is an Italian enclave located in Switzerland.

Many European cultures have influenced Italy to a great extent. The Etruscans and the Romans and then the Italian Renaissance have had a significant influence on the political and social fabric of Italy. However, the inflow of numerous migrants for over 3,000 years and the invasions of Germanic, Celtic, Greek, Lombard, Saracen, and Norman peoples have had also their impact. Rome, being Italy's capital has always been an important place of the Western Civilization as well as the Roman Catholic Church.

A democratic and developed country with a good degree of economic and political influence, Italy has the 7th-highest GDP as well as one of the Human Development Index ratios in the world. It was a member of the grouping of G8 and has now also known as the founding member of the European Union.

Among other feathers in its hat are its role in the establishment of the Council of Europe, the Western European Union and the Central European Initiative.

Geographically, Italy is bound on two sides with water bodies and on the other two by landmasses, that is, by the Tyrrhenian Sea on the west and by the Adriatic on the east. France, Switzerland, Austria, and Slovenia border it on the north. The climate in Italy is as diverse as its geographic diversity. Starting from folk music to classical, all have proudly held a place of interest in the culture of Italy. It is the place of origin of the famous Opera.
