Andorra

Andorra is the one of the rare examples of a landlocked country in the world. It is located in southern Europe, positioned among the eastern Pyrenees Mountains and lined by Spain and France. Andorra maintained its economic isolation for quite some time but now it is gradually integrating itself with the global economy and the flourishing tourism industry in Andorra and its position as a tax haven has attracted the attention of the world over. As of 2007, it has one of the highest life expectancy rates in the world, at 83.52 years.

Andorra is governed by the President of France and the Bishop of Urgell of Spain. Andorra's political life is woven within the framework of a parliamentary representative democracy, wherein the Prime Minister is the executive head of government of Andorra, and of a plural party system. The government exercises the executive power. While the government and the parliament together share the legislative functions. The Judiciary is however, independent of the executive and the legislature. Spain and France are together responsible for Andorra's defense as it has no military force of its own.

Tourism is the mainstay of Andorra's small but thriving economy, accounting for about 80% of the national revenues. Andorra's duty free status attracts some 9 million odd tourists each year. Andorra also houses some of the best summer and winter resorts. Andorra has recently lost its comparative advantage as France and Spain has joined it to provide broader availability of goods and lower the tariffs.

The banking sector also contributes a lot to the economy. Agricultural production is very limited and most of the food is imported. Domestic sheep rearing is the principal livestock activity. Cigarettes, cigars, and furniture constitute the major manufacturing output.

Andorra is a member state of the European Union. Catalan is its official language with Catholicism as the official religion. While Spanish, French and Portuguese are also spoken by a substantial segment of the population.
