Climate and the Ideal Time to Tour South Europe

The climate and the ideal time to tour South Europe can range throughout the year. Southern Europe is famous for its maritime climate, which remains pleasant for most part of the year. However, the climate and the ideal time to tour South Europe depend on whether you like summer temperatures or the winter ones. The winter will certainly be more comfortable to tour the region. The climate of Southern Europe or Mediterranean Europe is divided into five large subtropical high pressure zones in the oceans, that is, the Azores High, South Atlantic High, North Pacific High, South Pacific High, and Indian Ocean High. These high pressure belts shift towards the Poles during the summers and towards the equator during the winters. The Mediterranean climate zones are closely linked with the forests, woodlands, and shrubs. Particularly unique to this climate is the existence of sclerophyll shrub-lands, or the maquis, so called in the Mediterranean Basin, or the chaparral of California, the matorral of Chile, fynbos of South Africa, and the mallee, kwongan shrub-lands belonging to Australia.

During summer, the Mediterranean climate is predominated by the subtropical high pressure currents, making the dry air sink to cap a surface layer of sea breeze. It varies in humidity content, while there is no rainfall. During winters the polar currents enter the lower latitudes of the Mediterranean region, bringing rain to the region. It may also be accompanied by snow fall at higher altitudes.

Thus it is the winter when this region experiences the major part of its rainfall, with 5–6 months of dry summer. Winter precipitation reduces as one move towards the equator and increases towards the Poles.

All regions within the Mediterranean or the southern climates experience moderate winters, while summer temperatures depend on its closeness to the equator. The presence of large water bodies prevents the temperatures from becoming extreme under any circumstance. In rare cases these regions experience freezing winter temperatures in certain specific regions.
