Lisbon Portela Airport (LIS)

Situated at a distance of just seven kilometers from the city center, Lisbon Portela Airport (LIS) is the largest and the main international gateway for Lisbon, the political and the largest city in Portugal. The airport got its name from neighboring parish, Portela but is also recognized as Lisbon Airport. Not only for the capital city, But Lisbon Portela Airport (LIS) is also the main international gateway to Portugal and is a major European airlines hub. According to size, Lisbon Portela Airport (LIS) is the largest is the largest in Southern Europe and considered as one of the busiest airport in the continent. Lisbon Portela Airport has got two long runways that are capable of handling large aircrafts like Boeing 747. Lisbon Portela Airport served as one of the neutral airports in Europe that was open for both British and German airlines during World War II and was once a major hub for smugglers from all parts of Europe and the world. At present Lisbon Portela Airport (LIS) has the capacity to handle more than 120 million passengers and 81,000 tons of cargo. Lisbon Portela Airport also serves as the hub for airlines as TAP Portugal and Portugalia and is controlled and managed by Aeroportos de Portugal, a state-owned company.

Lisbon Portela Airport or Lisbon Airport started operation on October 15, 1942. Even at that time there were four 1000 meters long runway. Within a short time from commencing operation, Lisbon Portela Airport (LIS) expanded its runways, opened a new terminal and also expanded its parking facilities. Lisbon Portela Airport (LIS) has got one of the best infrastructures in Europe and also provides various facilities to its guests. There are 16 ATMs inside the terminal, one currency exchange center that is open in the weekdays from 8.30 AM to 3 PM. Inside the departure hall is a post office. Inside the terminals you would also get various retail shops, which include 10 clothing and accessories shops, four jewelery shops, a museum shop, two newspaper stands, a Portuguese wine shop, restaurant, bars, fast food outlets and gift shop.
